Just hours before Derek Chauvin was found guilty of the murder of George Floyd, police in Columbus, Ohio, fatally shot Ma’Khia Bryant, a Black teenager living in foster care. Her death is a stark reminder of the systemic violence inflicted upon Black, Brown and Indigenous children and youth in our country. They are more likely to live in poverty, more likely to be taken from their families, more likely to be overpoliced, more likely to be victims of “adultification,” and more likely to be killed by the police.
It must stop. The systems inflicting these harms must change, and in many cases be dismantled.
Our hearts go out to Ma’Khia’s family. We are ever more resolved to help end the cycle of racist violence in this nation.
